Parathyroid hormone, intact

Description

A polypeptide hormone of the parathyroid glands whose main function is the regulation of calcium and phosphorus metabolism in the body. The hormone level in the blood is directly dependent on the calcium concentration in plasma. Parathyroid hormone increases urinary excretion of phosphorus, activating calcium reabsorption in the renal tubules, thereby promoting its retention in the body. It regulates the activity of bone tissue synthesis by activating osteoclasts — cells that break down the bone matrix. Measurement of the hormone level in blood is used in the diagnosis of conditions associated with calcium deficiency in the body, osteoporosis, and urolithiasis.
