Description
It is a precursor of pepsin, synthesized by the chief cells of the gastric body glands and the pyloric glands of the proximal duodenum. The secretion level is controlled by gastrin and depends on the number of chief cells in the gastric body glands. The determination of pepsinogen II is used together with the determination of pepsinogen I to calculate their ratio, which reflects the number of chief cells of the gastric body glands with a high degree of reliability, i.e., the severity of atrophy of the gastric body mucosa. It has also been proven that the risk of developing gastric cancer increases with a low ratio of pepsinogen I to pepsinogen II levels.
Elevated levels are observed in: duodenal ulcer, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, gastric cancer.
Decreased levels are noted in: atrophic gastritis of the gastric body, pernicious anemia.
Indications for testing:
1. Diagnosis, monitoring and control of the treatment of atrophic gastritis of the gastric body
2. Complex diagnosis of gastric and duodenal ulcer disease
3. Complex diagnosis of malignant neoplasms of the stomach
4. Complex diagnosis of pernicious anemia
