Placental lactogen

Description

Placental lactogen is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of approximately 19,000. It is synthesized by the syncytiotrophoblast from early pregnancy, and its blood concentration increases during physiologically normal pregnancy. The maximum concentration of placental lactogen is recorded at 36-37 weeks of pregnancy, then stabilizes, and decreases before delivery. This test is used to diagnose placental insufficiency in the 1st trimester of pregnancy; in later stages of pregnancy, a sharp decrease in serum placental lactogen may also indicate placental insufficiency and chronic fetal hypoxia. Placental lactogen concentration is decreased in hypertension and late gestosis. An increase in concentration is observed in multiple pregnancy, diabetes mellitus, and Rh incompatibility. Placental lactogen is also produced by trophoblastic tumors. The greater the degree of malignancy, the lower the ratio of placental lactogen to human chorionic gonadotropin levels.

Indications for testing:
1. Diagnosis of placental insufficiency;
2. Diagnosis of fetal hypoxia and hypotrophy;
3. Diagnosis of multiple pregnancy;
4. Diagnosis of diabetes mellitus in pregnant women;
5. Diagnosis of Rh incompatibility between mother and fetus;
6. Diagnosis of trophoblastic tumor of the uterus.
