Description
Plasminogen is the main component of the fibrinolytic system. It is the precursor of plasmin, the key enzyme of fibrinolysis that triggers the lysis of fibrin clots (thrombi). Plasminogen is synthesized in the liver and converts to its active form, plasmin, under the action of plasminogen activators. Plasmin breaks down fibrin and fibrinogen to form soluble fibrin degradation products. The test is used to assess the state of the plasmin (fibrinolytic) system and is used to detect disorders of fibrinolysis, diagnose thrombophilia, and DIC syndrome.
