Description
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare, potentially life-threatening genetically determined disease manifested by edema of the skin and mucous/submucous membranes occurring as a result of bradykinin release. Characteristic features of edema in HAE are the absence of itching, skin hyperemia, accompanying urticaria, as well as the lack of effect from treatment with systemic corticosteroids and antihistamines. In 75% of cases, patients with HAE have a family history of the disease. In 99% of cases, the development of the disease is based on a deficiency and/or decreased functional activity of the C1-inhibitor due to pathogenic variants in the SERPING1 gene.
