Culture for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus)

Description

Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive bacterium belonging to opportunistic microorganisms. It has important clinical significance, as it can inhabit human mucous membranes and skin asymptomatically for a long time, causing disease only in case of reduced immune status or a decrease in normal microflora quantity. Depending on the habitat in the body, it can cause various diseases (pathological processes in the upper and lower respiratory tracts, infectious-inflammatory skin diseases, intestinal infections, etc.). It plays an important role in the pathology of newborns and infants, based on which screening for the presence of this microorganism is mandatory for pregnant women. Since latent bacterial carriage of S. aureus is quite common, workers in the catering sector, medical staff, and some other population categories are subject to mandatory examination for the presence of the microorganism in the upper respiratory tract.
The microbiological method allows isolating Staphylococcus aureus on special nutrient media, thereby revealing its presence in the body (and possible role in the development of pathology) or latent bacterial carriage.
