Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) culture with antibiotic susceptibility testing

Description

Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive bacterium classified as an opportunistic microorganism. It has significant clinical importance as it can inhabit the surface of human mucous membranes and skin asymptomatically for a long time, causing disease only in case of a decrease in the body's immune status or a reduction in the normal microflora amount. Depending on the location in the body, the microorganism can cause various diseases (pathological processes in the upper and lower respiratory tract, infectious and inflammatory skin diseases, intestinal infections, etc.). Staphylococcus aureus plays a major role in the pathology of newborns and infants, therefore screening for this microorganism is mandatory for pregnant women. Since latent S. aureus carriage is a fairly common phenomenon, food service workers, medical personnel, and certain other population categories are subject to mandatory examination for the presence of the microorganism in the upper respiratory tract.
The microbiological method allows isolating Staphylococcus aureus on special culture media, thereby proving its presence in the body and its possible role in the development of pathology, or detecting latent bacterial carriage. A distinctive feature of Staphylococcus aureus is the presence of multidrug-resistant strains, so the treatment of infection caused by this pathogen should be carried out taking into account the determination of its antibiotic susceptibility.

* The set of antibiotics depends on the isolated microorganism and the commercial test system currently provided by the manufacturer in accordance with modern recommendations / available for purchase in this region.
