Description
Pro-gastrin-releasing peptide (Pro-GRP) is a protein precursor capable of increasing gastrin levels in plasma. Gastrin is caused produced in large quantities by the gastric mucosa and is necessary for digestion; however, it has also been established that cells comprising small cell lung cancer secrete a large amount of gastrin-releasing protein into the blood. Determination of this protein itself in the blood is a laborious task due to its instability; therefore, the determination of pro-gastrin-releasing peptide (Pro-GRP) has been used for this purpose. The analysis is used to determine the presence of small cell lung cancer in a patient, especially at early stages, together with other examinations (radiography, computed tomography, biopsy). Pro-GRP can also be used to assess the extent of tumor growth, which is especially important for small cell lung cancer, as it is prone to metastasis.
