Progesterone

Description

Progesterone is produced in the ovaries and adrenal glands under the influence of the pituitary luteotropic hormone. One of the most important functions of progesterone is preparing the uterine endometrium for the implantation of a fertilized egg. Progesterone suppresses the activity of uterine muscles and the rejection reaction of the gestational sac, stimulates the development of the terminal secretory sections of the mammary glands and the synthesis of steroid hormones. In non-pregnant women, progesterone secretion is closely related to the menstrual cycle; the maximum hormone concentration is observed in the middle of the luteal phase. At the end of the cycle, a sharp drop in progesterone concentration leads to the shedding of the functional layer of the endometrium and the onset of menstrual bleeding. Determination of progesterone levels is used in the diagnosis of menstrual irregularities, miscarriage, and threatened pregnancy termination.
