Description
A glycoprotein with enzymatic activity. PSA is synthesized and secreted only by epithelial cells of the prostate gland and is a highly specific tumor marker for this organ. In blood serum, PSA is present in free form and in an inactive form bound to proteins. Total PSA represents the sum of the concentrations of the free and bound forms. The marker is used in the diagnosis and monitoring of prostate cancer and has high sensitivity and specificity. The ratio of total to free PSA has the greatest clinical significance; therefore, combined testing of these parameters is recommended.
