Cancer antigen CA 125

Description

A carbohydrate antigen that is a glycoprotein. Normally, it is detected in the cells of the peritoneum, pleura, epithelium of the fallopian tubes, and cervix. The level of this tumor marker increases significantly in ovarian cancer, especially in the presence of metastases and in the late stages of the tumor process. In addition, the CA 125 level may be elevated in benign and inflammatory diseases of the pleura, peritoneum, endometrial tissues, and during the first trimester of pregnancy. The diagnostic value of determining this antigen increases when other specific tumor markers are determined simultaneously. The test is used for monitoring ovarian cancer in patients who have undergone radiation therapy and chemotherapy in order to detect disease recurrence. For these purposes, it is recommended to test the tumor marker level at intervals of 2–3 months, evaluating the results over time.
