Description
It is a carbohydrate antigen normally produced by the epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal tract. An increase in CA 19-9 levels is observed in pancreatic cancer. The marker has low specificity, as its level rises even with minor cholestasis and inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. The test is used for the diagnosis and monitoring of pancreatic cancer treatment, and for the early detection of tumor metastasis.
