Description
A glycoprotein present in small amounts in various body tissues. Normally, CEA is synthesized in embryonic tissues, with synthesis ceasing after birth. Elevated concentrations of carcinoembryonic antigen in the blood are detected in various diseases of the intestine, pancreas, and liver. Elevated levels of this tumor marker are also observed in smokers. CEA is used for the diagnosis and monitoring of colorectal cancer and has clinical significance in monitoring cancers of the pancreas, lungs, stomach, and ovaries. It is recommended to assess the tumor marker level over time at intervals of 2-3 months.
