Description
Lactose intolerance, or lactase deficiency, is a condition in which the processes of splitting and assimilation of milk sugar (lactose) are disrupted due to a deficiency of the lactase enzyme. The ability toutilize lactose varies significantly depending on age and ethnic origin. Clinically, this condition is manifested by diarrhea, abdominal bloating and excessive gas formation, nausea, and abdominal pain. The lactase enzyme is encoded by the LCT gene. The MCM6 gene is located in close proximity to the LCT gene and regulates its expression, acting as an enhancer. Genetically determined (primary) lactose intolerance in adults is usually associated with an aberration in the MCM6 gene.
