Description
Renin is a protein-cleaving enzyme produced by the juxtaglomerular cells of the kidneys. Its main function is the regulation of blood pressure, potassium levels, and fluid volume balance.
Since reference values for renin are established for ages 18–65, testing is recommended for individuals within this age range. Reference values for other ages are not standardized.
Blood samples must be collected strictly between 7 and 10 a.m. due to the biological rhythms of renin secretion and the standardization of reference values to this time.
Samples are collected in a standing or supine position after staying in that position for 1 hour.
