Description
A specific protein of the mammalian erythrocyte membrane first discovered in Rhesus macaques. The protein belongs to the Rh system of erythrocyte antigens, in which five similar surface proteins are distinguished; the most immunogenic of them (D) was named the Rh factor. In the population, the Rh factor is distributed unevenly: about 85% of people are Rh-positive (Rh+), having it on the surface of erythrocytes, and 15% are Rh-negative (Rh-), lacking it. The Rh factor is of clinical importance in blood transfusion. Its absence in a mother pregnant with an Rh-positive fetus can cause hemolytic disease of the newborn.
