Description
A protein consisting of a small number of amino acid residues (oligopeptide), a byproduct of the conversion of proinsulin to insulin in the pancreatic beta-cells. Having a longer half-life than insulin, C-peptide is a convenient indicator that allows assessing the level of endogenous insulin in the body against the background of insulin therapy for diabetes mellitus and liver dysfunction. The urine test is performed when a prolonged assessment of beta-cell function is necessary or when frequent blood testing is undesirable.
