Description
A protein consisting of a small number of amino acid residues (oligopeptide), a byproduct of the conversion of proinsulin to insulin in the beta cells of the pancreas. Possessing a longer half-life than insulin, C-peptide is a useful indicator for assessing the level of endogenous insulin in the body against the background of insulin therapy for diabetes mellitus and liver function disorders.
