C-reactive protein, quantitative (normal sensitivity method)

Description

An acute phase protein, a highly sensitive and non-specific marker of active inflammation and tissue damage. Progressive increase in CRP correlates with the activity of the inflammatory process and the degree of tissue damage. CRP is a more sensitive indicator of active inflammation than ESR; however, C-reactive protein rises and disappears earlier than ESR changes. An increase in CRP may precede the appearance of fever, pain, and other signs of disease. Some specialists determine the duration of antibacterial therapy depending on the timing of CRP reduction. Independent determination of CRP does not allow clarifying the diagnosis and nature of the disease, but with high sensitivity, it makes it possible to establish the fact of active inflammation or tissue damage. The analysis results should be interpreted taking into account the indicators of other laboratory tests, data on the clinical picture of the disease, and conclusions of instrumental studies.
