Description
An acute phase protein, prolonged elevated basal concentrations of which in the blood indicate an inflammatory process in the vessel wall, the development of atherosclerosis, and are associated with the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and their complications. CRP participates in the activation of complement and monocytes, stimulation of the expression of adhesion molecules ICAM-1, VCAM-1, E-selectin on the endothelial surface, binding and modification of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), i.e., it promotes the development of atherosclerosis. According to the results of recent studies, it is believed that persistent low-grade inflammation in the vessel wall plays a major role in the development of atherosclerosis, which, in turn, is associated with the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases. Damage to the vessel wall, the onset of inflammation, and an increase in CRP are promoted by "classical" risk factors for cardiovascular diseases: smoking, obesity, and decreased tissue sensitivity to insulin action.
