Serotonin in blood

Description

Biogenic amine. Secreted by neurons located in the hypothalamus and brainstem. Synthesized from L-tryptophan. Sunlight is required for synthesis. Serotonin synthesis from tryptophan is vitamin D-dependent. Precursor of melatonin. Major neurotransmitter. Participates in the regulation of vascular tone and blood coagulation. Causes increased secretion of prolactin and other hormones of the anterior pituitary gland. Activates motility and secretion in the gastrointestinal tract, enhancing peristalsis and secretory activity. Sources: mushrooms, bananas, pineapples, kiwi, plums, tomatoes, seeds, chocolate. Decreased level: pathological conditions not associated with neoplasias - depression, Parkinson's disease, untreated PKU, Down syndrome, Werlhof's disease, leukemias, parenchymal liver diseases. Increased level: neoplastic conditions - carcinoid syndrome, tumors causing atypical carcinoid syndrome (oat cell carcinoma of the bronchi, medullary thyroid cancer); pathological conditions not associated with neoplasias - acute intestinal obstruction, acute myocardial infarction, dumping syndrome, cystic fibrosis, celiac disease. Intake of drugs that may affect level changes: antidepressants, lithium preparations, MAO inhibitors (iproniazid, moclobemide, etc.), methyldopa, morphine, reserpine.
