Occult Blood in Stool, Quantitative (FOB Gold Method)

Description

An immunological method for the quantitative determination of hemoglobin in stool, which allows diagnosing minor occult bleeding from the lower gastrointestinal tract.
In colorectal cancer, blood can be excreted with fecal masses long before the first symptoms of the disease appear. Screening examination of stool for occult blood among people in risk groups helps to diagnose the disease in time and reduce mortality from colorectal cancer by 15-33%. The effectiveness of such screening has been confirmed by several studies.
It has been proven that the immunological fecal occult blood test (FOB) is the most convenient test method due to its simplicity and effectiveness of cooperation with patients. It allows accurately determining the amount of hemoglobin (Hb) in the stool, while patients are not required to follow a diet or change their lifestyle. The method is based on the antigen-antibody agglutination reaction between human hemoglobin present in the sample and anti-hemoglobin antibodies on latex particles. A positive test result requires further examination to clarify the causes, since a benign polyp, diverticulum, hemorrhoids, or inflammatory bowel diseases can be the source of minor blood loss. The occult blood test is positive in 1-5% of people on average, of which cancer is detected in 2-10%, and adenomatous polyps of the colon in 20-30%. In case of a positive reaction for occult blood, an additional examination is performed to detect cancer, a polyp, or another cause causing bleeding.
