Total immunoglobulin A (IgA) in serum

Description

Belongs to the beta-globulin fraction and accounts for up to 15% of all immunoglobulins. It is synthesized primarily by lymphocytes of the mucous membranes in response to local antigen exposure. Its main function is to protect mucous membranes from pathogenic microorganisms, potential allergens, and autoantigens. By binding to microorganisms, IgA antibodies prevent foreign antigens from entering the body, thereby preventing the development of chronic local inflammatory processes.
Increased levels are observed in: acute bacterial, parasitic, viral, and fungal infections; liver diseases (viral hepatitis, cirrhosis); systemic connective tissue disorders (systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis); blood system disorders (acute and chronic lymphocytic leukemia, multiple myeloma, Waldenström's disease); cystic fibrosis.
Decreased levels are possible in: immunodeficiency states (hereditary hypogammaglobulinemia or agammaglobulinemia, acquired immunodeficiency – AIDS), neoplasms of the immune system, prolonged protein loss in kidney and intestinal pathology, chronic infections, and after splenectomy.
Indications for testing:
1. Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of acute bacterial, parasitic, viral, and fungal infections
2. Diagnosis of immunodeficiency states
3. Diagnosis of systemic connective tissue diseases
4. Diagnosis of blood system disorders
5. Diagnosis of immune system neoplasms
It is also recommended to additionally test IgM, IgE, IgG, leukocytes, lymphocytes, ESR, and acute-phase parameters.
