Description
In free form, small amounts are present in serum. As reaginic antibodies, they are found on the membranes of basophils and mast cells. They participate in allergic and anaphylactic reactions, as well as in antihelminthic immunity. Determination of serum IgE levels is widely used for the diagnosis of atopic allergic diseases and has important prognostic value.
Elevated levels are observed in: atopic allergic diseases (allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, atopic bronchial asthma, drug and food allergies), anaphylactic diseases (urticaria, systemic anaphylaxis), parasitic infestations (ascariasis, toxoplasmosis, trichinellosis, echinococcosis, nematodosis), immune diseases (thymic aplasia, IgE myeloma).
Decreased levels are possible in: hereditary or acquired hypogammaglobulinemia, ataxia, telangiectasia.
Indications for the test:
1. Diagnosis and monitoring of allergic diseases
2. Diagnosis and monitoring of anaphylactic diseases
3. Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of helminthiases
4. Diagnosis of certain immune diseases
It is also recommended to additionally investigate levels of IgM, IgA, IgG, leukocytes, lymphocytes, ESR, and acute-phase markers.
