Total Immunoglobulin M (IgM) in serum

Description

These are complex proteins normally consisting of 5 subunits. They belong to gamma globulins and account for 10% of all immunoglobulins. They are synthesized predominantly by lymphocytes at the first stage of the immune response to foreign antigens ("alarm antibodies"). Class M immunoglobulins include antimicrobial antibodies, rheumatoid factor, isohemagglutinins, and ABO blood group antibodies.
Elevated levels are observed in: acute bacterial, parasitic, viral, and fungal infections; liver diseases (viral hepatitis, cirrhosis); systemic connective tissue disorders (systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis); blood system diseases (acute and chronic lymphocytic leukemia, multiple myeloma, Waldenström's disease); cystic fibrosis; candidiasis.
Decreased levels are possible in: immunodeficiency states (hereditary hypogammaglobulinemia or agammaglobulinemia, acquired immunodeficiency – AIDS), neoplasms of the immune system, prolonged protein loss in renal and intestinal pathology, chronic infections, after splenectomy.
Indications for the test:
1. Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of acute bacterial, parasitic, viral, and fungal infections
2. Diagnosis of immunodeficiency states
3. Diagnosis of systemic connective tissue diseases
4. Diagnosis of blood system diseases
5. Diagnosis of neoplasms of the immune system
It is also recommended to additionally test the levels of IgA, IgE, IgG, leukocytes, lymphocytes, ESR, and acute-phase indicators.
