Description
Free testosterone refers to testosterone not bound to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). For diagnostic purposes, determination of free testosterone in blood is used for clinical evaluation of total testosterone test results. Normally, biologically active fractions of the hormone account for about 60% (1-2% in free form, 58-60% bound to albumin). The remaining testosterone is bound to SHBG and lacks hormonal activity.
Reference values for free testosterone are standardized only from the age of 18 years.
