Description
Free testosterone is a biologically active fraction of the steroid sex hormone testosterone, not bound to blood proteins. The level of testosterone in saliva can be used as an optimal marker in the diagnosis of the body's androgen status in men, women, and children. The study is intended for quantitative measurement of the level of the free fraction of testosterone in saliva and is offered as a method for determining the biologically active hormone. Most of the testosterone circulating in the blood is bound to proteins: about 60% to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), the remaining part (except for 2-3%) is non-covalently bound to albumin. Free testosterone and albumin-bound testosterone possess biological activity. The concentration of testosterone in saliva correlates well with the concentration of the free fraction of testosterone in the blood.
