Description
Thyroid hormone synthesized and secreted by the follicular epithelium cells of the thyroid gland, but the majority of the hormone is formed outside the thyroid gland as a result of thyroxine metabolism. Most of the hormone is bound to blood transport proteins. T3 controls vitamin A synthesis in the liver, heat production, oxygen consumption rate, participates in maintaining the normal function of the respiratory center, increases erythropoietin formation, enhancing erythropoiesis, and stimulates protein synthesis. Determination of triiodothyronine levels is used for diagnosis and monitoring of therapy for T3-induced thyrotoxicosis.
It is recommended to take the test in the morning. For the most informative results, check with your attending physician for the optimal time to take the test.
