Description
A thyroid hormone synthesized and secreted by the follicular epithelial cells of the thyroid gland, although the majority of the hormone is formed outside the thyroid gland as a result of thyroxine metabolism. It is the active fraction of triiodothyronine responsible for all the main biological effects of the hormone in the body. Thyroxine controls the synthesis of vitamin A in the liver, heat production, oxygen consumption rate, participates in maintaining the normal function of the respiratory center, increases erythropoietin formation, enhancing erythropoiesis, and stimulates protein synthesis. Determination of free T3 is used in the diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis and hypothyroidism.
