Description
A specific blood plasma protein containing copper, the main functions of which are participation in iron metabolism and redox reactions. Ceruloplasmin participates in reactions of attaching iron to hemoglobin heme. As an antioxidant, it participates in lipid metabolism. The functional integrity of ceruloplasmin is closely linked to hepatic ATPase, which promotes the inclusion of iron into its composition. With genetic defects accompanied by the absence of this enzyme, Wilson-Konovalov disease develops, which is characterized, in addition to specific clinical manifestations, by a decrease in the level of ceruloplasmin in the blood.
