Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)

Description

Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid, antidermatitis factor) is chemically a dipeptide consisting of residues of the amino acid beta-alanine and pantoic acid. Once in the body, pantothenic acid turns into pantethine, which is part of coenzyme A, playing an important role in oxidation and acetylation processes. Coenzyme A is one of the few substances in the body involved in the metabolism of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Vitamin B5 is required for the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, amino acids, and the synthesis of vital fatty acids, cholesterol, histamine, acetylcholine, and hemoglobin. Pantothenic acid is sensitive to heat; nearly 50% of the vitamin is lost during thermal processing. Pantothenic acid is found in very many products of animal and plant origin (yeast, fish roe, beef liver, egg yolk, green parts of plants, milk, carrots, cabbage, etc.). Pantothenic acid is also synthesized by intestinal flora. The most important property of vitamin B5 is its ability to stimulate the production of adrenal hormones — glucocorticoids, which makes it a powerful tool for treating diseases such as arthritis, colitis, allergies, and heart diseases. It plays an important role in antibody formation, aids in the absorption of other vitamins, and participates in the synthesis of neurotransmitters. A deficiency of pantothenic acid in the body leads to metabolic disorders, resulting in dermatitis, depigmentation and hair loss, growth cessation, exhaustion, changes in the adrenal glands and nervous system, as well as disorders of movement coordination, heart, kidney, stomach, and intestinal functions. The cause of vitamin deficiency can be low content of proteins, fats, vitamin C, B vitamins in food, diseases of the small intestine with malabsorption syndrome, as well as prolonged use of many antibiotics and sulfonamides.
