Description
Vitamin D is a group of biologically active fat-soluble substances (including ergocalciferol and cholecalciferol). The vitamin consists of calciferols that acquire activity under ultraviolet irradiation. In the body, this process takes place in the skin. Vitamin D participates in the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus and their deposition in the bones of a growing organism. Its deficiency leads to rickets. Vitamin D deficiency is a very common phenomenon capable of causing problems with the growth of cells in organs, the largest of which is the skin. Scientists are also looking for evidence that long-term vitamin D deficiency leads to cancer. Sources of the vitamin include fish oil, cod liver, yeast, whole milk, butter, and egg yolk.
