Description
Vitamin E (tocopherol) is a fat-soluble vitamin that is an important antioxidant. It exists in nature in eight different forms, differing in biological activity and functions performed in the body. As an antioxidant, it protects the body from the harmful effects of toxins, for example, lactic acid. Its deficiency can serve as one of the causes of lethargy and anemia. It is found in vegetable oil and butter, greens, milk, eggs, liver, meat, as well as cereal germs. As a food additive, it is designated as E307 (?-tocopherol), E308 (?-tocopherol), and E309 (?-tocopherol). It participates in the biosynthesis of heme and proteins, cell proliferation, tissue respiration, and other metabolic processes in cells. Vitamin E deficiency leads to a decrease in the osmotic resistance of erythrocytes, loss of reproductive ability, decreased sexual drive, the formation of pathological fat deposits between muscle fibers, degenerative changes in cardiac and skeletal muscles, as well as dry skin.
