Description
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a water-soluble vitamin. It is a powerful antioxidant, protecting proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids from the effects of free radicals. It ensures collagen synthesis, participates in the metabolism of folic acid and iron, and plays an important role in the synthesis of steroid hormones and catecholamines.
The human body cannot replenish vitamin reserves on its own, so it must obtain ascorbic acid from food. Sources of the vitamin are plant-based products, such as kiwi fruit, rose hips, red pepper, citrus fruits, black currants; green vegetables, tomatoes, cauliflower, and potatoes. Ascorbic acid deficiency results in bleeding gums, tooth loss, poor wound healing, hair loss, dry skin, irritability, general fatigue, weakness, and depression.
