Helicobacter pylori, antigen

Description

Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative bacterium capable of infecting the stomach and duodenum. Helicobacter is capable of weakening the protective properties of the mucous membrane of the stomach and duodenum against acidic gastric contents, thereby causing a predisposition to the development of gastritis or peptic ulcer disease. A link has been proven between Helicobacter infection and the development of gastric carcinoma. The prevalence of the infection is approximately 40-50% among the population in developed countries and 80-90% in developing countries. Detection of Helicobacter antigen in feces is a minimally invasive, simple, highly specific, and sensitive method for both diagnosing Helicobacter infection and monitoring the treatment carried out for it. Indications for ordering the analysis: • Peptic ulcer of the stomach and/or duodenum. • Gastroesophageal reflux disease. • Atrophic gastritis. • Preventive examinations to identify people at risk of developing ulcers or stomach cancer. • Evaluation of therapy effectiveness. • Stomach cancer in close relatives.
