Description
Reflects the total capacity of blood serum proteins to bind iron. The iron-carrier protein in the blood is transferrin, which primarily determines the ability of serum to bind and transport the trace element in the body. TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity) shows the amount of iron that blood serum can theoretically bind. The indicator has diagnostic value in iron deficiency anemias. It is used to monitor therapy with iron preparations.
